Are You Already in the Cloud?: Social Media and Cloud Computing

By | August 12th, 2011|Cloud Computing, Computer, Program, Reviews|0 Comments

You’ve probably skimmed through articles about cloud computing in business magazines or online. Everything from online fax services to data storage has been influenced by and developed through the Cloud. While this buzzword may seem far from you, your life, and your work, cloud computing informs a huge part of the web: social media. Social networking sites like YouTube, Flickr, Facebook, and Twitter all use cloud computing in their own way. Since your everyday life and business is informed by this technology, it could be helpful to understand the basic cloud services and their function. There are three different cloud services: application, infrastructure, and platform. The cloud application services, Software as a Service (SaaS), deliver software as a service over the internet. Customization is generally limited on SaaS software, as of right now. Examples of SaaS include Gmail, Google Docs, Salesforce.com, and Workday. Cloud infrastructure services, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), allows for the use of applications, storage, and networking infrastructure as a service. This can be useful for startups who aren’t sure how successful a newly launched website or application will be. For example, Amazon Web Services, RightScale, and Proofpoint. Finally, cloud platform services, Platform as a Service (PaaS), deliver a computing platform and sustain a cloud infrastructure and applications. Examples of PaaS include Microsoft Azure Service Platform and Force.com (part of Salesforce.com). If you opt for PaaS you can focus on developing an application, while the platform is already sustained. Independent Software Vendors and IT service providers usually subscribe to PaaS. There are plenty of ways that companies are using the Cloud to tap into social networks and improve Customer Relationship Management (CRM). For example, real time, in process analytics have made it possible for companies to analyze customer behavior and predict future behavior based on customer patterns. Through cloud computing, we can better pinpoint customer dissatisfaction and take corrective action. Another example of the capabilities of the Cloud is SaaS application marketing. Under the SaaS model, a company can add a new social media channel or feed to an application and make it available to customers on-demand. New technology is eneabling companies to better understand and connect with their consumers. While cloud computing can seem foreign at first, once you’re familiar with the basic premise you can use the Cloud to your advantage. […]
